Epic Challenges

I have a rather self-destructive tendency towards very long and involved challenges. Basically, I wanted something more out of each challenge. Not So Berry, I felt, needed to be updated for all the new packs and be a full tour of what the Sims 4 is about.. so that’s what I did. The Decades Challenge – wasn’t as realistic as I would have liked, it needed .. more death, more random-ness, and more historical events.. so that’s what I did. These challenges have become quite popular, so much so that there have been requests for my to “adopt” other long challenges that have been seemingly abandoned by their original authors. One in particular caught my eye as being something I was very much interested in – the Build a World Challenge – so I’m in the process of updating, adapting, and preparing it for a full launch on my site. Expect to see that soon after this website migration is complete. (The challenge will likely be ready mid to late November 2023.) Also, if you like what you see here, and want to expand on change something on ANY of my challenges, feel free – as long as you credit me for my ideas in your write-up!

Once I had updated a couple longer challenges, I braved making an epic challenge of my own. First it was the Master Simmer Challenge – a challenge about experiencing everything that Sims 4 has for you. Another Challenge that does this for you is one of my Adapted Challenges, my Extended Not So Berry (found in the next section). Then, I really went out on a ledge and went for a real tough challenge to write. This challenge, the Timeline Adventure Challenge, has become by “baby”. I adore it in so many ways. It’s a story, it’s a legacy, it’s a way to experience history, and it can be played in so many different ways. Going the full CC route is one of my favorite ways, but it’s entirely possible to play it without any CC at all. If you are in ANY way interested in history or story-telling, this is a challenge for you. Eventually, I’m sure, I’ll end up writing another crazy long challenge of my own, but for now, I’m pretty happy with the two I’ve got. Enjoy!

So, lately I’ve been starting to write some more challenges… and this page will eventually be getting more challenges. For now, we Launch with just the one, but I know of at least one that it’s the works that will be entered into this category, too. These are challenges that are less than 5 generations, and often one generation and done sort of things. The first one, the Winchester Mystery House… that one involves a fair bit of building, but the upcoming challenge, “Chased by Death” will not. Enjoy!

This list is specifically a list of what I consider “shorter” gameplay challenges. These are all 11 generations (or less) challenges. All challenges included here are written, adapted or collaborated on by me over the years that I have been playing Sims 4. If you’re looking for a longer or more involved challenge, check out the two Epic Challenge sections below!

My history with challenges involves a LOT of starting challenges, and very little finishing them. I always find something I would like to change.. Or something that sounds better… so, I started writing my own challenges. It all began with the Apartment Switch, which is an original challenge based on the Drifter Challenge, and designed to be a continuation of that challenge. This challenge took me ages to write, and even longer to test and finally publish. But in the end, it was all worth it, because it’s a super challenge, and really makes use of the strengths of the City Living pack. After that, I dabbled with some other challenges, updated and changed the rules on some, and came up with a few others on my own. These include my Mermaid Legacy, as well as a collaborative werewolf legacy called the Lunar Lineage. Currently, I have another fully original concept challenge (my Misery2Mansions) in the works, as well as a super cool adaptation of the Asylum challenge that is interactive for streamers. Eventually, I will be making a version that will work for solo players, as well, which will be a lot of fun. Also have a possible idea for a Backwards ISBI challenge concept. So, feel free to look around, find something you like, and even take one of my ideas and make it yours. Just remember to credit me (and anyone else you use as the inspiration), and you can do what you like with my challenges! Welcome in!

Welcome to my newest project! A blogging friend of mine approached me recently about collaborating on a new legacy challenge, and I jumped at the chance. Now, a few weeks later, we’re ready to reveal. I hope you all have as much fun playing this as we did writing it! Enjoy!! (Oh, and both of us are doing stories based on this challenge on our blogs, as soon as the stories go live, their links will be posted at the bottom of this page!)

Background Story: Werewolves have been hunted to an apparent extinction in your world. However, you feel that maybe they still exist… and perhaps they are the key to finding out why you have always felt such a connection with the moon. You vow to find out for sure, and to research your mysterious family history. Perhaps you can even bring Werewolves back to the world and start a real legacy of your own.

Challenge Description: This is an original 11-gen challenge (10 generations plus a Gen zero/prologue gen.) designed to help you explore the Werewolf pack (and its interactions with other occult states). This is why the other occult life states are highly recommended as must-have packs. Getting into character and role-playing along or writing a story (either literally or in your head) is highly encouraged, but not required. That being said: it’s also about having fun. With that in mind, feel free to adapt or change the rules as you see fit so that you can fully enjoy the challenge.

The major difference in this legacy when compared to others you will find is that there are banned skills listed for each generation. These are to make it more difficult. Avoid using these skills, with the ultimate goal of keeping them under level 2. If you somehow accidentally get them to 2, it is not a challenge fail, but aim to keep the skill level on them as low as possible.

Main Page | Gen 1 – 10 | Gens 11 – 20 (WIP)
Gen 16 – 20 | Gen 21 – 25 | Gen 26 – 30 | Gen 31 – 32

Generation Thirty-One: Blood

Maybe your family has been too close to nature lately, but somehow, the lure of the beasts of the forest has been calling to you since you became an adult. Consequently, you immediately delve into the lore surrounding them, and, finally, you become a beast yourself.

Traits: Active, Hot-Headed, and either Outgoing (Emissary of the Collective), Loyal (Wildfang Renegade), or Loner (Lone Wolf)

Aspirations: Werewolf Initiate, & (Emissary of the Collective, Wildfang Renegade, or Lone Wolf)

Career: (Any)

Goals:

  • Move to Moonwood Mill
  • Become a werewolf
  • Complete the Werewolf Initiate Aspiration
  • Then, pick either the Emissary of the Collective, the Wildfang renegade, or the Lone Wolf aspiration, and complete that as well. (If you’re extremely ambitious, optionally, you can complete all three.)
  • Become an Alpha in your chosen pack (If you decide to do more than one aspiration, make sure to step down from being alpha before switching packs!)
  • Max the following skills on your main sim:
    • Athletics
    • If you picked Emissary of the Collective: Charisma
    • If you picked Wildfang Renegade: Mischief
    • If you picked Lone Wolf: Guitar
  • Find your soulmate and marry them
  • Have at least 1 child and raise them to Young Adult
  • Before continuing to generation 32, before you finish this generation, have your heir (if they’re a werewolf) complete the Cure Seeker aspiration.

Generation 32: Chestnut (orange-red)

Your parents got lost inside the beasts of the forest, but you have a different idea. Why not have the “beasts” work FOR and WITH you instead of becoming one. You move to Chestnut Ridge, and immerse yourself in the equestrian lifestyle. On your spare days (what few of them there are!) – you spend free time making and aging nectar for sale. Horses don’t make you money, you know.. so you have to have some way to support your habit!

Traits: Horse Lover, Rancher, Loves Outdoors

Aspirations: Expert Nectar Maker, Championship Rider (both are one-tier aspirations)

Career: Self-employed Nectar-Maker

Goals:

  • Make sure your main sim is human (they should have completed Cure Seeker aspiration before moving out.)
  • Move to Chestnut Ridges
  • Complete both aspirations
  • Max the following skills on your main sim:
    • Horse Riding
    • Nectar Making (5 level skill)
    • Gardening
    • Dancing (5 level skill)
    • Fitness
  • You can start off by buying more expensive horses, but you must also rescue at least two horses over your career. They may be sold once fully trained (must have max in at least two skills before selling).
  • Breed at least 3 foals on your own ranch.
  • Train at least 2 horses to championship status – both must have won EACH competition at least once. This includes all levels of competitions (beginner to expert) and the ultimate horse competition.
  • Have at least three mini goats at any one time. Someone has to mow all that prairie grass, you know… 🙂
  • There are a good number of other things you’ll need to do to master the two aspirations, including selling a lot of nectar, but I’m not going to write all of them down here. (Hint: nectar ages better in a cellar, so I would build one!)
  • Having children is completely up to you. If you’re moving onto another challenge, or EmilyBlueJaye’s “Super Extended Not-So-Berry“, you’ll need an heir.

Once you’re ready to play, grab a copy of my Timeline Adventure Challenge Tracking Spreadsheet to track your progress!

Note on Lots: I will be building pre-built lots and putting them on the gallery with the tag “#timelineadventure” as I work through the challenge myself. My sims Origin tag is IllusoryThrall, feel free to toss me a follow. I will link each generation’s pre-built lots in boxes like this on this page for each generation – so if you’re not a builder, you can still easily play this challenge. I will eventually get to building lots for all generations, but for now it’s just the first few generations that I have completed. All lots mentioned on these pages are CC-free and playable! Also, if you build a lot that qualifies as those two things and want it included in these lists, please just drop me a comment here or a message at IllusoryThrall on the sims forums, I will check it out and add it if it fits!

Gen 36: The Epidemic (2020s)

You grow up in a world with ready access to whatever you need, plenty of friends, and 2020 is just another year until the virus hits. Suddenly the world as you knew it is gone, changed probably forever by the ever-growing crisis. You feel like you desperately need to be on the front lines, making a difference in this new world of delivered food, virtual concerts, live stream gaming, and face masks. Somehow you manage to find someone for you and the two of you start a family, doing everything you can to keep them safe and healthy.

  • Similarly, you also can pick any three skills to master from the whole list of skills as long as the fourth skill you max is Dance (which maxes at level 5).
  • (You also get to pick the third Lot Trait.)

  • I suggest getting a CC facemask for all your sims to wear outside the house for this generation.

Generation 36 Lots:

Gen 37: Repairing Relationships (2025s)

The Epidemic single-handedly ruined so many relationships over it’s course. Which only made you want to fix them all. You gravitate towards counseling, and settle easily into the relationship counselor role. Each person you meet is another soul who needs healing, and your mission is to heal them all, whether they’re your client or not. Unfortunately, something has to give … and in this case, it’s your own family life that suffers.

  • Once your lovey-dovey aspirations are complete (and they do not need to be completed all with the same partner!), ignore your partner in favor of your job.
  • Similarly, spend very little time with your children, and leave their care up to nannies or your current partner. However, all children MUST continue to live with you!
  • Your heir MUST be MALE and their traits will be Genius, Ambitious, and Self Assured; their aspiration will be Nerd Brain.

Generation 37 Lots:

Gen 38: The Future in Space (Near Future)

In the aftermath of the Epidemic, the weird new world is completely obsessed with technology. Artificial intelligence seems just around the corner, and as a child you begin your passion for looking to the stars. You have become obsessed with the idea of alien life. You want to be the first to discover it and bring it back to your world. Building a Rocket Ship of your own takes all your free time, and you get a permanent crick in your neck from always looking to the sky. When you finally make contact, and they show you how to get to their world, you suddenly don’t want to share it at all. This must be all yours and yours alone. You fall in love with an alien, and you eagerly start a family with them. Unfortunately, you did not understand the consequences of bringing forth such life, and now it seems it could be the catalyst that triggers the end of the world.

  • Build and FULLY upgrade a Rocket Ship on your home lot.
  • Visit Sixam in your rocket, meet and fall in love with an alien.
  • Have at least one alien child from abduction (if possible). This child will be your heir. If you can’t get pregnant by abduction by the time the other goals are completed, then a part-alien can be heir instead.
  • Your heir must be at least part alien (and hopefully capable of disguising themselves), and their traits will be: Genius, Creative, Geek; and their aspiration is City Native.

Generation 38 Lots:

Gen 39: The Age of Automation (Future)

You are raised with a toe in both of your parents’ worlds. With an eye to the past, you realize you must find a way to automate more daily tasks and upgrade the world around you. Being partially not of this world, you struggle to fit in and you choose a high-population area to settle into in the hopes that your differences won’t be noticed. With hard work and dedication, artificial intelligence is soon right at your fingertips, and you become the change the world seems to need. As you study this new technology, you even find ways to upgrade yourself. You are now the future. You find a spouse, still carefully hiding what you are away from them. Despite the fact that you spend most of the time in your workshop, you find time to bring at least one child into the world, and you only let them in on your shared secret as they prepare to go out into the world as an adult.

  • Skills to be maxed: Robotics, Singing (on main sim)
  • Have a robotics station in your own home with one goal: making a Servo of your own to activate. Any other robots you choose to invent is up to you.
  • Stay in disguise form 100% of the time, (if you have the ability to make a disguise, that is). Avoid using alien powers, and try to keep your secret hidden. (If you are found out, it doesn’t break the challenge, but at least TRY to not let it happen.)
  • Marry a human sim, and have at least one child (who is also part alien, thanks to you).
  • (Whether or not the Servo you create moves to the next generation with your heir is also your choice.)
  • Your heir’s traits will be: Loner, Paranoid, Erratic; and their aspiration is StrangerVille Mystery.

Generation 39 Lots:

Gen 40: The End of the World

Right as your parent lets you in on the craziest secret you’ve ever heard of, your world crumbles. Not just because you find out you’re something you never wanted to be, but because the literal world is ending. Organized society has come crashing down for unknown reasons, and on top of this – you find out that those like you are being hunted. You carefully hide the part of you that is not of this world, quickly making yourself constantly paranoid. You are always looking over your shoulder, never knowing who might be following you. Anarchy reigns, and it’s a harsh world you find yourself lost in. Searching for yourself in and amongst the disaster, you endeavor to find out what exactly happened to the world. The question eventually becomes, can you save the world … and can you also save yourself in the process?

Town: Strangerville (Shady Acres)

Lot Traits: Fast internet, Penny pixies, Private Dwelling

Lot Challenges: Off The Grid (you will use generators and such for power and water)

Holidays: None. There is nothing to celebrate anymore.

Traits: Loner, Paranoid, Erratic

Aspiration: Strangerville Mystery

Career: None

Gen 40 Goals:

  • Complete the StrangerVille Mystery aspiration on main sim (or take it as far as you can before choosing to side with Mother and not save the world.)
  • Skills to be maxed: Programing, logic, Writing (on main sim)
  • You trust no one. Never get past “friends” in a relationship. (no “good” or “best” friends)
  • Solve the StrangerVille mystery.
  • Never marry and have no children.
  • Die at the hands of the Mother, side with the Mother, (OR) Save the world.
  • If you side with the Mother or die, the challenge ends now. (I highly encourage saving the world before going into Mother’s chamber, in other words.)
  • Only if you manage to (or choose to) save the world can you then adopt one baby, infant, or toddler (an orphaned survivor of the catastrophe) and raise them to adulthood to continue the legacy.
  • Become best friends with your child.
  • Also: If you brought the Servo, you can continue to take them with you.
  • Your heir’s traits will be: Maker, Green Fiend, Recycle Disciple; and their aspiration is Eco Innovator.

Gameplay Notes / Reference:

  • Coming of Age, marriage, moving, and kids: When a sim of your bloodline comes of age (age 14 for 1890-1950, age 16 for 1950+), you must do four things:
    • 1. Roll for whether they will get married. (Roll a ten sided die, if you get a 1, 2, or 3, they don’t get married – this will mean females will stay in the family home, while men can move out and get a home or apartment with whatever their inheritance is)
    • 2. Roll for how much money they get as an inheritance or dowry (use this table & 6 sided die.)
      • 1 = 0 simoleons
      • 2 = 5,000 simoleons
      • 3 = 10,000 simoleons
      • 4 = 15,000 simoleons
      • 5 = 20,000 simoleons
      • 6 = 25,000 simoleons
    • 3. Roll for how old they will be when they marry or move.
      • Use a 10 sided die, using the below table as a guide until 1950.
        • Roll a 1 = teen + 24 days (15 years old)
        • Roll a 2 = teen + 31 days (16 years old)
        • Roll a 3 = teen + 38 days (17 years old)
        • Roll a 4 = YA (18 years old)
        • Roll a 5 = YA + 7 days (19 years old)
        • Roll a 6 = YA + 14 days (20 years old)
        • Roll a 7 = YA + 21 days (21 years old)
        • Roll an 8 = YA + 28 days (22 years old)
        • Roll a 9 = YA + 35 days (23 years old)
        • Roll a 10 = YA + 42 days (24 years old)
      • After 1950, use an 8 sided die and this table to set their ages in MCCC:
        • Roll a 1 = teen + 38 days (17 years old)
        • Roll a 2 = YA (18 years old)
        • Roll a 3 = YA + 7 days (19 years old)
        • Roll a 4 = YA + 14 days (20 years old)
        • Roll a 5 = YA + 21 days (21 years old)
        • Roll a 6 = YA + 28 days (22 years old)
        • Roll a 7 = YA + 35 days (23 years old)
        • Roll an 8 = YA + 42 days (24 years old)
        • Remember: The heir of any family does not move, they inherit the house!
    • 4. If they’re NOT in your main household, roll for how many “try for baby” times they are allowed. Use a 6 sided die. (If they’re in the main household, you decide how many kids they get.)
    • Note: If you’re marrying in sims, only your related sim makes these rolls. The only roll that applies to the townie, downloaded, or created non-bloodline sim is the money roll.
  • Death rolls as an Elder:
    • Once your sim reaches the Elder life stage, at the beginning of every year (Sunday), roll a six sided die. The difficulty of the roll increases every time you roll. So, follow the below chart:
      • elder + 0 = difficulty 0 (no need to roll)
      • elder + 7 = difficulty 1 (must roll 2 or higher)
      • elder + 14 = difficulty 2 (must roll 3 or higher)
      • elder + 21 = difficulty 3 (must roll 4 or higher)
      • elder + 28 = difficulty 4 (must roll 5 or higher)
      • elder + 35 = (death by old age imminent, no need to roll)
    • (After 1940, this roll changes to a twenty sided die. See below:)
      • elder + 35 = difficulty 5 (must roll 6 or higher)
      • elder + 42 = difficulty 6 (must roll 7 or higher)
      • elder + 49 = difficulty 7 (must roll 8 or higher)
      • elder + 56 = difficulty 8 (must roll 9 or higher)
      • elder + 63 = difficulty 9 (must roll 10 or higher)
      • elder + 70 = difficulty 10 (must roll 11 or higher)
      • elder + 77 = difficulty 11 (must roll 12 or higher)
      • elder + 84 = difficulty 12 (must roll 13 or higher)
      • elder + 91 = difficulty 13 (must roll 14 or higher)
      • elder + 98 = difficulty 14 (must roll 15 or higher)
      • elder + 105 = difficulty 15 (must roll 16 or higher)
      • elder + 112 = difficulty 16 (must roll 17 or higher)
      • elder + 119 = difficulty 17 (must roll 18 or higher)
      • elder + 126 = difficulty 18 (must roll 19 or higher)
      • elder + 133 = difficulty 19 (must roll a 20)
      • elder + 140 = death by old age imminent, no roll.
    • Also, remember you can check exactly how old a sim is in MCCC – use the “sim commands” menu, “set age”, then “set days in age span” and it will tell you exactly how old your sim is.

Updated: 5/6/22 to add Gen 5
Packs needed: Cottage Living & Seasons *
Packs Recommended: Laundry, Outdoor Retreat, City Living, Jungle Adventures, & Island Living **
Hashtag: #misery2mansions

This is my new project – a new original concept challenge designed to show off the Seasons and Cottage Living packs. There are other packs that are recommended, but they aren’t 100% required for play. (They will affect the difficulty if they’re missing, though.) See the rest of this page for the reasons the packs are recommended or needed. This is a difficult challenge where you start out with the bare minimum to survive, and eventually – through unlocking items each generation – end up living in a mansion on a huge farm. Unlocks are done through Errands completed, ribbons won, skills maxed, money earned, and even Aspirations completed.

Warning: this challenge is still under construction. As of this writing, only generations 1-5 are fully complete.

Heavily Modified Settlers Challenge

I found this challenge on Mod the Sims.. (here) and liked the look of it, so I started playing. I found it 1.. too easy.. and 2.. lacking in rules for the expansions. So I’m modifying it for my uses. I don’t plan to blog the story of my “colony” (town), but I may post […]

I am a 47 year old American wife, mother, and gamer. I’ve lived in the Midwest most of my life, and enjoy it for the changing seasons. My favorite movie is Labyrinth, my favorite game is Sims 4, and I have tattoos related to both. My favorite colors are purple, red, and green. When I’m not playing games (which is rare) I also enjoy reading and crafting. I’m also an animal lover, and have had many types of pets over the years. Currently, I have a dog named Cassie who is a Jack Russel / Beagle mix and five young fancy rats (all of whom are rescues). I run this Sims 4 Blog where I post screenshots and stories about the different challenges I play. Also here are the Sims 4 challenges I've written, and a place for me to store all the Sims 4 knowledge I've gotten over the years. I am also a Sims 4/variety streamer on Twitch for my mental health, fun, and to meet new people. I am also in the EA Creator Network and an Ubisoft Partner, which is a dream come true! I look forward to meeting you!
